Education Excellence Secret of Finland: Workshops in Pakistan

According to research, school leadership rates second among school-related factors that impact student learning – teaching rates first. Moreover, school management strongly shapes the conditions for high-quality teaching and is the prime factor in determining whether teachers stay in high-needs schools. Therefore, high-quality school managers are vital to the effectiveness and education excellence of schools.

To fulfill the need, we at KOULU Group are excited about the idea of being able to present the best that Finland has to offer delivered in a fresh participatory way, via workshops organised with UMT University of Management Technology. The workshops will take place on May 15 – 23 in five different cities in Pakistan: Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Faisalabad, and Sialkot. There will be 2-day professional development workshop in each city on “Buiding Blocks of Education Excellence: Sharing the secret of Finland” with distinct themes for each day:

  • Day 1 – General Management of Schools
  • Day 2 – Management of Skills Development.

The training consists of three main elements: introductory lectures that address the main topics to be covered, participatory workshops where the participants apply the freshly gained knowledge in their own context and reflecting discussions lead by the experts building a joint understanding regarding the topics and working towards stronger contextualisation of the topics covered.

These workshops offer the participants and opportunity to get to know the Finnish education excellence system and learn what practices drive education in the globally leading country in learning outcomes and results. In addition to experts from UMT, the workshops feature two key experts from Finland: Ms. Satu Järvinen (Partner & VP Education Services at KOULU Education Group Ltd.) and Mr. Jerker Polso (Assistant Principal & Doctoral Candidate at Vaajakoski Comprehensive School).

With a strong belief that technology gives students unprecedented advantages for learning and cultivating critical skills, Ms. Järvinen works with local and global partners to develop and effectively deploy education solutions for all learners and educators. Her expertise includes designing learning environments and delivering innovative professional development programs, as well as wide experience from working with education and development in different types of schools ranging from primary schools to university level. Meanwhile, Mr. Polso’s expertise includes pedagogical leadership, special education, and teachers’ professional development with a background in special education and educational management. In addition to teaching at all levels of the Finnish education system from kindergarten to university, Mr. Polso has worked with teachers’ continuing education in Finland and abroad in various positions for over 10 years.
